Wireless Communication -- " Ham Radio "

Ham radio operator is an amateur radio operator who by sheer virtue of his interest and fascination towards wireless communication tries to establish radio contacts around the world. The unique mix of fun, public service and communication is the main characteristic of Amateur Radio. All hams have a common basic knowledge of radio technology and operating principles. In the US, hams have to pass an examination for the FCC license to operate on radio frequencies known as the "Amateur Bands."

There have been many debates as to why an amateur radio operator is called a ham. Some say HAM relates to three great radio experimenters namely Hertz, Armstrong and Marconi.

Who can be a typical ham? A typical ham can come from any walks of life be it movie stars, doctors, students, politicians, missionaries or just a common man on the street. They all say hello to the world and no matter which code they use they have an interest on whats' happening around the world and love to share it with others over the radio. To be a ham radio operator in India, you have to be above 12 years of age and pass a qualifying examination conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India.

Operators in amateur radio service never accept money and love to experiment with their own radio transmitters and receiving equipments along with fellow experimenters.

What do hams do with amateur radio?

QRP: Communicating with "very low power" is a difficult task that many hams love practiced usually on the HF bands.

HF radio: All Hams can chat with other hams in any part of the globe using HF radios

DXing: DX means distance communication and with the right equipment worldwide communication on the HF bands (10 through 160 meters) is a regular possibility.

Emergency and other volunteer services: Hams use radio communication to inform people about emergencies like floods, landslides, earthquakes, Cyclones, Accidents (Rail / Road / Air).

Technical experimenting: Hams come from all walks of life ranging from technicians to engineers, teachers to scientists, and students to retirees and the chief attraction for many is to build their own equipment whether it is just a simple antenna, a transmitter, or an interface between their radio and a computer.

Contesting: Contesting is often called the "sport" of ham radio. Almost all the time there is some form of amateur radio contest.

Talk to an astronaut: A ham radio operator can talk to an astronaut.

Use digital communication: Connect a computer to your radio and install some software and you can be communicating digitally over the air.

Happy HF Communicating ;)
