In this article, I would like to share the benefits of the divine fruit - Amla (Indian Gooseberry/ Nellikkaai). Gooseberry is the most important medicinal fruit in Ayurveda. It is as nourishing as a mother's milk. It has 5 tastes (sweet, sour, astringent, bitter, pungent) except salt. This makes the fruit a perfectly balanced one for all the body types and has a rejuvenating effect on the body. From common cold to cancer, Amla has the power to treat almost any disease. It is said that if a healthy person consumes Amla and Turmeric on a regular basis, in addition to good diet and lifestyle, the person will be free of all life-threatening diseases and also enjoy a good lifespan.
Some of its benefits are listed below:
- Strengthens digestive system
- Anti-oxidant
- Anti-inflammatory
- Diuretic
- Laxative
- Liver tonic
- Hair tonic
- Prevents peptic ulcers
- Hormonal modulator
- Reduces cholesterol
- Boosts oxygen level in the blood
- Supports/ maintain normal sugar levels
- Increases Ojas (immunity)
- Prevents anemia
Amla has the intelligence to kill the cancer cells without damaging the normal cells. It also provides intelligence to the normal cells so that it does not turn cancerous. If a person is undergoing chemotherapy, Amla is considered to help the normal cells to fight against the damage caused by chemotherapy. It protects against radiation-induced sickness. Amla nourishes the muscle tissue by enhancing the absorption and digestion of proteins.
It is said that Vitamin C decomposes in heat. But Amla has a particular molecule of Vitamin C which does not decompose in heat like the regular ascorbic acid. Amla does not create acidity in the body but alkalizes the body by its sweet post-digestive effect. By alkalizing the body, it prevents inflammation and prohibits the production of C-reactive proteins.
When the first two tissue - Rasa (plasma) and Rakta (blood) are healthy, the person's skin will get the glow. Amla keeps the skin healthy and increases its fairness and glow. Amla nourishes the brain and helps in coordination of dhi (power of learning), dritti (power of retaining) & smriti (power of recalling). Give your kids amla berry everyday and see their intellect improve naturally. It increases Sattwaor the positive pranic energy flow and distribution.
When combined with coriander, Amla balances the blood and urinary pH and the coordination between the brain and kidneys. It relieves the burning sensation while urinating. It acts as a diuretic without over-stimulating the urinary system. Amla also balances Alochaka Pitta (which governs our eye health) and provides visual support. The bitter taste in Amla gently detoxes the body by opening the micro-channels of the cells and flushes the toxins out.
Apana Vata governs the bowel movement, menstruation, fertility etc. Amla balances Apana Vata by regulating the menstrual cycle and supporting the reproductive system of both men and women. It nurtures ovaries & sperm and enhances the fertility. It strengthens the uterus and increases the possibility of conception.
Chyawanprash and Triphala are the popular tridoshic herbal mixtures used in Ayurveda for boosting immunity. Amla is one of the important ingredients in these rasayanas. Amla is one of the 3 ingredients in Triphala used to balance pitta, even though it is Tridoshic (balances all doshas). The other 2 ingredients are Haritaki (to balance Vata) and Bibhitaki (to balance Kapha).
Amla can be used as a substitute for tomato or tamarind in rasam, dhal, chutney, raitha, soup etc. You can also include Amla in your homemade hair wash powder. Try to include Amla in your daily diet and stay young forever :)
