Greetings!!!!
Have you heard of Nanaari Sarbath, a popular summer drink?
Yes! Today I would like to share the cool benefits of Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus Indicus/ Anantamul/நன்னாரி). Sarsaparilla root is one of the best rasayanas widely used in Ayurvedic medicines. It cleanses the tissues especially Raktha dhatu (blood tissue) and Meda dhatu (fat tissue) and cools the body. Even though its a coolant, it also increases the digestive fire and helps in digesting your food as well as emotions.
Some of its benefits are listed below:
Skin health:
Sarsaparilla cleans the pores of the skin by purifying the sebum and sebaceous glands. It pulls the toxins through the sweat and treats inflammatory issues such as acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, flaky skin, leprosy, urticaria and herpes. When combined with herbs such as neem, sandalwood and turmeric, sarsaparilla reduces skin inflammation and gives a clear complexion and a natural moisturizing property.
Hepatoprotective:
Liver is the organ which is largely affected due to over use of medications. When liver is heated up, Ranjaka Pitta goes out of balance. This leads to heat-related disorders such as headache, mouth ulcer, jaundice, burning sensation in the eyes, yellow urine, skin rash, gray hair etc. Sarsaparilla detoxes the liver gently, thereby preventing liver cirrhosis and also increases the bile flow from gall bladder.
Depression:
Sadhaka Pitta - Prana Vata - Tarpaka Kapha, when this combo goes out of balance, the person suffers from depression. Sarsaparilla, being tridoshic, balances this condition by relieving negative emotions and calming the mind. When it is combined with Rose and Brahmi, it helps immensely in various psychological disorders.
Arthritis:
Acidic toxins in the body solidifies and when accumulated in the joints, causes inflammation. This affects the cartilage that protects the bone which will eventually cause pain, swelling and stiffness thereby leading to Arthritis. Sarsaparilla's anti-inflammatory property is used in treating many Vata disorders like arthritis, glandular swelling, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and gout. Sarsaparilla, when combined with sesame oil, castor oil & camphor, applied externally, will help in relieving joint pain. To prevent Vata imbalance, choose Vata-pacifying diet by consuming cooked food instead of raw salads, pure cow's ghee, fresh juicy fruits, soaked nuts & dry fruits. Avoid potatoes, biscuits, bread, chips, popcorn etc.
Kidney health:
Sarsaparilla is very effective in treating bladder and urethral inflammatory disorders such as cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), kidney infections etc. It acts as a good diuretic and excretes toxin accumulated in the kidneys without straining the kidneys and by cooling the urinary tract.
Cleans Fat tissue:
Meda dhatu (Fat tissue) is built from water and earth elements. Toxins, especially chemical toxins, are easily accumulated in this tissue. This prevents nutrients to be carried on to the next tissue - the bone. Sarsaparilla detoxes, cools and nourishes the fat tissue and prevents toxin build-up. To prevent chemical toxicity, choose natural organic household and beauty products.
Here are some home remedies:
For Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), boil 1 cup water with 1/4 tsp Sarsaparilla powder + 1/4 tsp Sandalwood powder + 1/4 tsp Gokshura powder and have it twice a day for 3 days. In addition to this, the person should follow a Pitta pacifying diet by reducing spicy and sour foods to cure UTI.
For dry or inflamed lips: Melt 2 tbsp ghee and add 1/8 tsp Indian sarsaparilla powder and a pinch of Slippery Elm powder. Mix well and let it sit for a day. Filter the ghee and apply to get a soft, pinky lips.
Do not consume store-bought Sarsaparilla sarbath/syrup. Instead, buy the Sarsaparilla root or powder and make the syrup by adding enough palm jaggery or succanat. It has a good shelf life.
Chronic inflammation is the major cause for cancer. Poor diet, Lack of sleep, Lack of physical activity, Stress and Suppressed emotions are all the root causes for inflammation. Prevent inflammation by choosing the right food for your body type. Reduce the consumption of spicy and sour foods. Include moderate amount of black pepper and ginger instead of red chilly for spiciness. Avoid processed, packaged and restaurant foods. Always prefer homemade food. Have a good night's sleep. Try to keep your mind calm by engaging yourself in a gentle yoga, pranayama and/or spiritual practices. Volunteering for a good cause is the best medicine for stress.
Enjoy Sarsaparilla sarbath and stay cool!
