Lemons are sour, heating and has a sour post-digestive effect. This is the main reason why many people who take lemon juice/lemon honey/lemon ginger water get heartburn/acidity symptoms. People suffering from Pitta or Kapha related disorders should avoid lemon as it has the tendency to worsen the condition. But lemon acts as a best medicine in some situations. Equal amount of lemon juice and honey can be licked during nausea or vomiting. A mix of diluted Lemon juice with cilantro juice can be taken for kidney stones. However, if the same person is suffering from any respiratory disorders or acidity, lemon should be avoided and some other remedies should be followed to remove stones. Lemon peel can be added to tooth powder to brighten the teeth.
Limes are sour, mildly bitter, cooling and has a sweet post-digestive effect. Lime is acidic only in the taste level. It becomes alkaline once it reaches the digestive system. However, if taken in excess, it will aggravate Pitta and Kapha. Limes are effective antidote to alcohol. Lime should be avoided during cold/cough. Diluted lime juice with rock candy will help in indigestion. Lime juice with raw honey and hot water will help in obesity. Lime peel is a stimulant and also helps to strengthen the liver. Traditional Lime pickle in a small amount is good for digestion and absorption. Good lime pickle will NOT contain red chilly powder and oil.
People suffering from severe skin diseases, allergies or respiratory disorders should avoid lemon and lime. Don't worry about Vitamin C. Amla, curry leaves, broccoli, guava, kiwi, papaya, strawberry, parsley, Brussels sprouts are also rich in Vitamin C. Do not cook lime or lemon. It will make it more acidic. Add it to the dish just before serving !!!!
