Puri Ratha Yatra 2024
Setting Off for a Spiritual Sojourn
On a promising, cloudy morning of July 5th, a group of ten friends embarked on a pilgrimage from Bangalore to witness the grand spectacle of Puri's Ratha Yatra. Our journey commenced at 10:50 AM from SMVT Bangalore station aboard the Howrah Express, our hearts brimming with anticipation.
To ensure a comfortable and satisfying travel experience, we had thoughtfully packed a traditional vegetarian feast comprising idlis, pooris, tomato thooku, rotis, and sanjis. The train journey was a delightful tapestry of laughter, shared stories, soulful devotional songs, and mesmerizing landscapes.
Reaching Puri: A Spiritual Awakening
After an enchanting train ride, we arrived at Khurudha Road Junction the following afternoon. We promptly secured tickets for the local train to Puri, scheduled for 12:30 PM. As the train glided through the countryside, our excitement for the upcoming Ratha Yatra reached a crescendo.
Upon reaching Puri station, we swiftly hired autos to our chosen abode, The Sun Gate hotel, strategically located near the majestic Jagannath Temple. The thrill of being so close to the spiritual epicenter was palpable. After a quick freshen-up and a delicious lunch, we were raring to witness the grandeur of the Rathas being prepared for the next day's procession.
The Magic of Preparations
The temple premises were a beehive of activity as artisans meticulously adorned the three colossal chariots – destined for Lord Baldev, Goddess Subadra, and Lord Jagannath – in their iconic colors of green, red, and yellow respectively. We captured these mesmerizing moments on our cameras, eager to share the magic with friends and family back home.
The town was pulsating with a unique energy, a harmonious blend of tradition, excitement, and devotion. People from all walks of life were united in their anticipation for the Rath Yatra. The streets were a vibrant mosaic of shops, food stalls, and security personnel working tirelessly to ensure a smooth procession. As the day drew to a close, we retreated to our rooms, our minds filled with the day's experiences. We meticulously planned our vantage point for the Rath Yatra, ensuring comfort and a clear view of the procession. The hotel had thoughtfully provided chairs and shelters on the terrace, a thoughtful gesture that enhanced our anticipation.
The Grand Spectacle: Rath Yatra Day
July 7th dawned with an aura of excitement and reverence. Clad in traditional attire, we eagerly made our way to the temple premises to catch a glimpse of the fully adorned chariots. After a hearty breakfast, we visited the nearby Lord Hanuman temple, seeking His blessings for the day ahead.
The atmosphere was electric as the time for the Rath Yatra drew near. The divine procession began with Lord Baldev, His chariot adorned with white and pink lotus and tulsi. The sight of the Lord being carried by devotees was truly mesmerizing. The energy was palpable, as if the Lord Himself was dancing with joy.Jai Baldev |
Goddess Subadra followed, Her chariot resembling a vibrant painting in motion. Finally, Lord Jagannath made His grand entrance, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.

The procession snaked through the streets, culminating at the Gundicha Temple. We were fortunate to have Lord Baldev's chariot halt right opposite our hotel, a blessing we couldn't fathom.
The following days were a whirlwind of darshan, prayers, and immersing ourselves in the spiritual fervor of Puri. Jai Jaganath
A Day of Bliss by the Sea
Before bidding adieu to the holy city of Puri, we dedicated our final day to the enchanting allure of the Puri beach. As the morning sun kissed the shoreline, we embarked on a thrilling adventure that included a camel ride, invigorating swims in the crystal-clear waters, and a leisurely horse ride. The salty breeze and the rhythmic lullaby of the waves provided the perfect antidote to the spiritual fervor of the previous days.
Returning to our hotel, refreshed and rejuvenated, we carried with us not just memories but a profound sense of peace and fulfillment.
Our Journey Homeward
Our final day in Puri began with a visit to the Gundicha Temple, 9after our beach visit in the morning) where we paid our respects to the divine trio once more. After a fulfilling lunch, we embarked on our return journey, departing from Puri railway station at 3:30 PM. Our onward train to Bangalore was scheduled for 6:55 PM from Bhubaneswar station.
Our hearts overflowed with gratitude as we witnessed the grandeur of the Rath Yatra and received the blessings of the Lords. The journey back home was a bittersweet farewell, our minds and souls forever enriched by the divine experience.
