I would like to share the powerful benefits of the least-consumed fiber-rich fruit "Pear" ( பேரிக்காய் in Tamil). Pear is one among the few fruits which does good to your body even after cooking it. In fact, pear cooked with some cloves and a teaspoon of ghee, taken for breakfast during cold seasons, will help with your digestion, elimination and emotional uplift. Due to its good amount of Vitamin C, pear helps in preventing seasonal cold and flu. They are also rich in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous properties.
Some of the benefits of Pear are listed below:
- Cures constipation (consume raw sweet juicy pear or cooked pear to relieve constipation)
- Anti-spasmodic
- Lowers cholesterol
- Immune booster
- Prevents Osteoporosis
- Helps in weight loss
- Good for vision problems
- Heart healthy
- Prevents anemia
- Controls high blood pressure
- Relieves fever
Sweet juicy pear pacifies Pitta dosha (body heat). Pear lowers the risk of kidney stones and cardiovascular diseases. Fresh juicy pear instantly provides energy to the body and relieves fatigue.
Gut is your "second brain". When your intestinal walls are ruptured due to ulcers caused by a spicy/acidic diet or medications, it affects your digestion and friendly gut bacteria. Pear helps greatly in restoring the gut lining and there by building immunity. It also helps in rejuvenating the pancreas.
In my previous article about "suppressed emotions", I had mentioned how emotions can affect your health. If a person is suffering from "Sadhaka Pitta" imbalance, then he/she will not be good at digesting emotions. Yes! you need to digest your emotions, just like how you digest your food, to be stress free. Those people might not have a good night sleep and might have some uncomfortable feeling in the heart. If you are one of those who suffer from such unreleased emotions, then try including pear in your diet. It helps in digesting your emotions and relieve your stress.
Our eyes are one of the most used (sometimes misused) organ in our body. Nowadays we see young kids having lot of vision problems due to poor diet, overuse of electronics and sometime due to birth defects. Pear is a good source of flavonols, anthocyanins and carotenoids which helps in poor eye sight. They are also rich in copper and iron which increases RBC count and thus helps in anemia.
Pear is also considered as an hypoallergenic fruit, which means people with food allergies can usually tolerate pear. However, if you have severe food allergies, it is better to follow certain guidelines. There are a vast varieties of pear available in the market. Choose the one which suits your body type and current health condition. Firm, unripe pear might aggravate Vata dosha (air & space element) which could lead to anxiety, depression, constipation, gas, bloating, arthritis, shortness of breath and poor memory. For those who already suffer from any of these issues must consider eating sweet juicy pear or cooked pear with clove and ghee or as a pear chutney with cumin, turmeric & black pepper. Firm pear can be used in curries and subjis as well.
Fruits are the healthiest snack ever. Try to munch on seasonal fruits and introduce the habit of eating fresh fruits for snack to your children too.
