A hashtag is a label for content.Hashtags are used mostly on social media sites.A word or phrase preceded by a hash mark (#), used within a message to identify a keyword or topic of interest and facilitate a search for it. Whenever a user adds a hashtag to their post, it's able to be indexed by the social network and becomes searchable/discoverable by other users. The # symbol is precedes the tag followed by one or more keywords that will properly lead individuals to conversations and discussions pertaining to a specific topic or theme

They became famous on Twitter. Anyone sharing content on a relevant topic can add the hashtag label to their message.
